Built by Pressure: Too Much or Not Enough?
Burnout, self-doubt, and what it really means to be strong
We all feel it.
That pressure in the gut when you wonder if you’re being too loud, too quiet, too bold, too soft, too emotional, too distant, too driven, or too lazy.
It’s like you can’t win.
You fear being too something and that fear either fuels you or floors you. There’s rarely any in-between.
But here’s the thing:
That pressure is not the enemy.
In fact, I think we need it.
It’s a sign you care.
It’s a sign you’re stretching.
It means you're actually doing something worth doing.
But left unmanaged, that same pressure becomes:
Anxiety
Burnout
Self-doubt
Exhaustion
That fog that makes you forget why you even started
And I know this because I’ve lived it.
Let’s break it down.
There are two sides to pressure:
1. The healthy kind
This is the type that sharpens you.
It pushes you to focus, to take action, to perform.
It gets you out of bed when it would be easier to stay in it.
Think of it like the weight in your hand during a lift,
it’s not there to break you, it’s there to build you.
You need that resistance to grow.
2. The toxic kind
This is when the pressure starts whispering things like:
“You’re not enough.”
“You should be further ahead.”
“You’re going to mess this up.”
“People are watching don’t screw it.”
When pressure gets a voice, and that voice becomes a dictator, that’s when it becomes a problem.
It’s no longer fuel.
It’s fire.
And it burns you from the inside out.
So how do we deal with it?
You don’t ignore it.
You don’t run from it.
You don’t pretend it’s not there.
You learn to work with it.
Because here’s the truth:
Pressure doesn’t always mean danger. Sometimes it means you’re alive.
It means you're on the edge of something.
And everything good lives on the edge.
So the question becomes...
How do you keep pressure from turning into stress?
Here’s what’s helped me:
1. Know the signs
The first step is recognising when pressure is shifting into the red zone.
Some clues:
You can’t sleep but you’re tired all the time
You’re irritable over nothing
You feel like you can’t switch off
You stop enjoying the things that used to give you energy
You keep telling yourself “just push through it”
That’s not discipline, that’s a warning light.
2. Build a resilient mind
Resilience isn’t about never breaking.
It’s about knowing how to bend.
And that means:
Giving yourself grace without giving yourself excuses
Understanding your limits without becoming your limits
Being honest with yourself but still backing yourself
You don’t have to be superhuman.
You just have to be self-aware.
3. Pressure ≠ identity
This one’s big.
You are not the pressure you feel.
You are not defined by how productive you are or how much you’re “on it.”
You are a human being.
Not a task list.
Not a deadline.
Not someone else’s expectations.
You’re allowed to be figuring it out. Most people are, they’re just better at hiding it.
The Line Between Growth and Grind
You can carry pressure without letting it control you.
You can push yourself without pushing yourself over the edge.
You can care deeply without letting fear take the wheel.
When you feel like you’re being too something...
ask yourself, Too much for who?
Because maybe you’re not too loud.
Maybe they’re too uncomfortable with honesty.
Maybe you’re not too quiet.
Maybe you’re just someone who listens more than they speak.
Maybe you’re not too sensitive.
Maybe you just haven’t hardened yourself into something you're not.
So here’s what I think:
Let pressure guide you, not crush you
Let fear inform you, not define you
Let growth challenge you, not break you
You’re allowed to be a work in progress
and proud of where you are.
Hold both. That’s strength.
What part of you have you been told is “too much” that might actually be your superpower?
Let the pressure build you.
Not bury you.
You're more ready than you think.
